Colonoscopy
A camera passed through the back passage to examine the large bowel. Polyps found during the test are removed at the same time.

- Blood in the stool
- Change in bowel habit lasting weeks
- Unexplained anaemia or weight loss
- Checking and following up IBD
- Screening for polyps and colon cancer

- Light diet and a bowel-cleansing drink the day before

Risks
Bloating and cramps for a few hours are common. Bleeding after polyp removal or a tear in the bowel are rare.

Is the bowel preparation difficult?
The cleansing drink is the hardest part, but it is important: a clean bowel lets small polyps be seen. Follow the timing exactly.
Will I feel pain?
Usually not. It is done under sedation, and you may feel some pressure or wind afterwards.
