Upper GI endoscopy
A thin camera passed through the mouth to look at the food pipe, stomach and first part of the intestine. Small painless biopsies can be taken.
What it is used for
- Acidity or upper belly pain that does not settle
- Difficulty swallowing
- Vomiting blood or black stools
- Unexplained anaemia or weight loss
- Testing for H. pylori and celiac disease
- Checking for varices in liver disease
What to expect
- Preparation
- Nothing to eat for 6 to 8 hours
- Time
- About 10 to 15 minutes

- Throat spray, or light sedation if you prefer

- Home the same day
Risks
Endoscopy is very safe. A mild sore throat for a day is common. Bleeding or a tear is rare, mostly when treatment is done during the test.

Can I eat after an endoscopy?
Yes, once the throat numbness wears off, usually within an hour. Start with something light.
Will I be awake?
You can choose throat spray only, or light sedation so you are drowsy and relaxed. Most people remember very little.
