Is fatty liver reversible?

Short answer

Yes. In its early stages, fatty liver can be fully reversed. Losing 7 to 10% of your body weight, being active every day and cutting sugar, refined flour and alcohol can clear the extra fat and even reverse early scarring.

How much weight do I need to lose?

Studies show that losing about 5% of body weight reduces liver fat, 7% can calm the inflammation, and 10% can reverse early scarring. For someone who weighs 80 kg, that means 4 to 8 kg.

Aim for half to one kilo a week. Very fast weight loss can worsen the liver and cause gallstones.

What helps the most

  • Cutting sugary drinks, sweets and packaged juices
  • Replacing maida with whole grains, millets and dal
  • Vegetables or salad with every meal
  • At least 150 minutes of brisk walking a week, which helps even before the weight falls
  • Avoiding alcohol completely

When it may not fully reverse

Once fatty liver has progressed to heavy scarring (cirrhosis), the scarring usually does not go away completely. Even then, the same steps slow the damage and protect the liver. This is why finding it early matters.

How do I know if my liver is scarred?

Fatty liver usually causes no symptoms, so tests are needed. Liver blood tests, an ultrasound and a liver stiffness test (elastography) show how much fat and scarring there is, and guide how often you need follow-up.
