Dilatation & stenting
Narrowed sections of the food pipe, bile duct or bowel are widened with a balloon, or kept open with a stent placed through the scope.
What it is used for
- Narrowings of the food pipe from acid, chemicals, surgery or radiation
- Achalasia (balloon dilatation)
- Blocked bile ducts
- Growths blocking the food pipe or bowel, to relieve symptoms

Risks
Chest discomfort is common for a day. A tear is uncommon. Stents can occasionally move or block and need adjustment.
